Rikki is a loner, always has been, but his perfect solitary existence is interrupted when he rescues a kitten from drowning in the creek. Suddenly, he's responsible for another life and he doesn't like it. He can't just abandon the poor scrap and sets out to teach him how to be a wild cat, determined that he should be able to choose for himself how he wants to live.

Tikki is living a double life. In the morning he hunts with his brother Rikki and sister Tavi, who believe he's a stray like them. After that its patrolling with Macho the leader of the house cats, acting as his second in command. Then its home by dinner, tucked up inside with his person, seven-year-old Morgan. When trouble brews between the house cats and the strays, whose side is Tikki supposed to be on?

Tavi has been trying for years to get a person. She meows, she brings them gifts, she chases off all the dirty strays, but no one seems to be interested in her. That is, until a strange boy gives her a collar then vanishes. Tavi makes it her mission to find the boy and claim him as her owner, but can she get to him before he moves out of the trailer park?

Veg somehow manages to convince Prichard, one of the Professor's curious pets to help him escape, but can they make it past killer canines and the Professor's clever traps? And if they do succeed in escaping Kitty City what of the world, and the actual city, beyond? Veg's going to need all his street-smarts if he's going to make it home to Sunny Grove Trailer Park...
